Agatha Christie wrote *Witness for the Prosecution* in 1925. The original story was published in Flynn’s, a weekly detective magazine circulated in early 20th-century Britain. 

According to her autobiography, *Witness for the Prosecution* was one of Agatha Christie’s favourites of all her works, stating: “One night at the theatre stands out in my memory especially; the first night of *Witness* [for the Prosecution]. I can safely say that that was the only first night I have enjoyed… It was one of my plays that I like best myself.” We'd like to think that the *Witness for the Prosecution* West End production would be loved by Christie too. 

It’s even more impressive that *Witness for the Prosecution* performances occur in a real court. London County Hall opened on 17 Jul. 1922, and served as the headquarters of local government for London for 64 years. When you’re watching the show, you’ll see the octagonal Council Chamber at the centre of County Hall — it once provided seating for over 200 council members and four galleries overlooking the Chamber for the public and members of the press. It’s the ideal immersive setting for an Agatha Christie courtroom drama.

## What is *Witness for the Prosecution* about?

Christie’s court classic sees Leonard Vole called to the stand after a murder. When his wife agrees to testify, can she be trusted? It’s up to you, the audience as the jury, to decide whether Vole will walk free or spend the rest of his life in shackles.

## Is *The Mousetrap* still running?

*The Mousetrap* is the longest-running play of all time. The original production opened across the road at the Ambassadors Theatre on 25 November 1952. Since then, *The Mousetrap* is now translated into 27 different languages in more than 50 countries worldwide. *The Mousetrap* then moved across the road to St. Martin's Theatre in 1974, where it's played ever since.

Agatha Christie’s the most-read British female writer of all time, with an estimated 4 billion copies sold. Add that to *The Mousetrap*’s record-breaking West End run, and it’s fair to say that Agatha Christie changed the landscape of the English language. 

Agatha Christie didn’t think much of *The Mousetrap* when it first opened though. Christie originally wrote the play for radio, and it later became a play, that at the time, Christie thought would only run for around 8 months. *The Mousetrap* play was written as a gift for Queen Mary’s 80th birthday in 1947. Agatha Christie then gave her grandson, Mathew Pritchard, the rights to the play for his ninth birthday.

## What to Watch For

- Look out for the wooden sign at the entrance to St. Martin's Theatre — it tallies up the number of performances to date and will let you know which performance of this record-breaking show you are attending.
- The clock above the fireplace in the main hall is the same clock that was used on opening night in 1952.
- In 2012, a star-studded cast including Patrick Stewart, Julie Walters, and Tamsin Greig took part in *The Mousetrap*.
- Former cast members have given record-breaking contributions. One of the original cast members, David Guyler, provided the prerecorded voice of the newsreader in the shop.
- David Raven is in the Guiness Book of Records as the “Most Durable Actor” having performed 4,575 performances as Major Metcalf. The late Nancy Seabrooke also holds a record for an impressive 15 years as an understudy in *The Mousetrap.*

In the course of the first 50 years, according to the programme notes, over 10 million people have seen the show and over 395 tons of ice cream have been sold!So what is the show's success? Part of it has to do with the fame of playwright Agatha Christie. In 1962 UNESCO announced that she was the most widely read British writer in the world, beating even Shakespeare, who came a miserable second. As the creator of such famous sleuths as Miss Jane Marple and the famous French, sorry Belgian, Detective Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie is the most famous 'whodunnit' crime writer of all time. Who has not heard of "Death on the Nile" or "Murder on the Orient Express"?Agatha Christie's fame has surely played a part in this show's success. In the 1950's Christie's books were regularly in the top sellers list. It was hardly surprising that a play, which has never been published or turned into a movie or tv programme, should attract avid fans. Since that initial enthusiasm the show has now become one of the essential things to do on many a tourists schedule - go to Buckingham Palace, visit the Tower of London and see 'The Mousetrap'.The play is your regular 'whodunit' mystery. Eight people are snowed in at a guest house: Mollie and Giles Ralston, the owners; four invited guests, each with eccentric characteristics; the unexpected guest, who turns up out of the blue after his car overturns in the snow storm; and finally a skiing detective. Once everyone has arrived it is not long before a murder takes place and the detective assembles all the guests together and interrogates them one by one. Each avoid the truth, some by silence and others by lies? Can the murderer be caught before more deaths happen?The story, whilst sensational and full of silly coincidences, is actually quite good. The characters are, despite their histrionics, vivid and they interact amongst themselves with macabre amusement. There are enough false clues to keep you guessing and a few hidden ones that mean if you stay alert you will not be too surprised to discover that the murderer is ****. Just kidding! St. Martin's Theatre flaunts a breath-taking architecture, showcasing Edwardian style designed by architect W.G.R. Sprague. The theatre can accommodate 550 people, promoting an intimate viewing experience for all. The St Martin’s Theatre opened on 23 Nov. 1916. The building was designed as a pair with the [Ambassadors Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/ambassadors-theatre). 

Ricky Meyer was responsible for transferring the theatre’s current tenant, *The Mousetrap*, from the next-door Ambassadors Theatre to the larger St Martin’s, to continue its record-breaking run. The production began in 1952 and has been performed on the London stage ever since.

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle.

Although the Dress Circle overhangs the Stalls at Row J the obstruction does not block anything. All seats in the Stalls have a good view of the stage.

The overhang of the Upper Circle doesn’t affect the view from any seat in the Dress Circle. 

Whilst the Upper Circle does not feel far from the stage, the view from the first two rows is impaired by a safety bar running along the front.

*1536* is a play that boasts a formidable cast, including Liv Hill, Siena Kelly, and Tanya Reynolds, as they reprise their roles. The cast also includes Harry Bradley, Oliver Johnstone, George Kemp, Saroja-Lily Ratnavel, and Sydney Spencer. 

The production is directed by Lyndsey Turner and written by Ava Pickett. Alongside them is a masterful creative team, including design by Max Jones, lighting by Jack Knowles, sound by Tingying Dong, and music by Will Stuart.

This production feels alive, with its poignant topics. It is filled with justified female rage at how structures of authority more often than not provide a feeling of safety for men who ultimately want to harm women. It bridges the gap in the belief that we have left inequality behind us in the past, because, really, we are still struggling with gender equality even today.
