Trick or treat? With this show you get both. The trick is a con-artist demon in a striped suit, scheming his way into Lydia Deetz's haunted new home. The treat is this "absolute scream" (The Standard), with sets that turn the Prince Edward Theatre into the West End's most gloriously ghoulish haunted house. Just don't say his name three times, or do if you dare — it's Halloween after all!

Beetlejuice: The Musical - LON - TT Override

Don’t miss *Beetlejuice*, a hilarious supernatural hit filled with cheeky demons, fussy ghosts, and an incredible sense of humour, directed by Alex Timbers, as it graces the West End.

Be possessed by the world of *Beetlejuice* in this wildly hilarious Broadway hit based on Tim Burton's beloved film, now haunting the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. Book *Beetlejuice* tickets on London Theatre.

*Beetlejuice* is a musical that follows Lydia Deetz, a peculiar teenager grieving the death of her mother and feeling deeply out of touch with the living world. When she moves into a home that is haunted by the recently deceased Adam and Barbara Maitland, she finds herself face to face with Beetlejuice, a bombastic demon with a masterful plan and a certain charisma for making drama feel irresistible. As Lydia and the house's ghosts form an alliance spanning worlds, the show waxes and wanes between witty supernatural comedy and intimate family dysfunction.

The West End musical stars David Fynn as Beetlejuice and Hannah Nordberg as Lydia, with David Hunter and Chelsea Halfpenny as Adam and Barbara Maitland, Alasdair Harvey as Charles Deetz, Aimie Atkinson as Delia Deetz, Chasity Crisp as Maxine Dean/Juno, Richard Frame as Otho, Irvine Iqbal as Maxie Dean, Rachel MacDougall as Girl Scout, and Vanessa Aurora Sierra as Miss Argentina. The musical has music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect, the book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, and it is directed by Alex Timbers.

The musical also boasts a formidable creative team, including orchestrations and incidental music by Kris Kukul, set design by David Korins, costume design by William Ivey Long, light design by Kenneth Posner, and sound design by Peter Hylenski.

*Beetlejuice* in London is one of the season's most spectacular shows, filled with irreverence and hilarity. This show is for audiences who are enthralled by the dark and mysterious, fueled by supernatural mayhem.

Beetlejuice: The Musical - LON - LT Override

Be possessed by the world of *Beetlejuice* in this wildly hilarious Broadway hit based on Tim Burton’s beloved film, now haunting the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End.

[*Beetlejuice* the musical](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/45407-beetlejuice-the-musical), based on Tim Burton’s 1988 film, has finally arrived loud, proud and death-dripping into the Prince Edward Theatre, after gathering a devoted cult following from its original Broadway run in 2019. And this visual spectacle is very much your classic big-bucks West End show. The sets are exceptional and eccentric. There are special effects galore. Half the audience comes dressed to honour Beetlejuice in stripes and green wigs.

But even with all the shiny packaging, Alex Timbers’ production never emotionally flies. That might be because *Beetlejuice* on Broadway feels different to *Beetlejuice* in the West End. Here, its all-American book by Scott Brown and Anthony King feels out of sync with British dry humour. Beetlejuice, played by David Fynn, is a scheming lunatic, gifting the audience chaotic asides and constant roars. The sickly-sweet couple Barbara (Chelsea Halfpenny) and Adam Maitland (David Hunter), who die tragically in an electrical accident, are oh-so twee and almost entirely void of irony.

Then there’s Delia (Aimie Atkinson), a wellness-babbling life coach who feels ripped straight from an Instagram infographic. Only Lydia (a brilliantly gothic Hannah Nordberg), in the early throes of grief after her mother’s death, truly manages to tug at the heartstrings, her spiky exterior acting as a cape for all the pain hidden underneath.

![Beetlejuice - LT - 1200](//images.ctfassets.net/6pezt69ih962/21LPYJl71yZLBQTtQhcD9W/c499d6415760a81dce7a189938cccf93/Hannah_Nordberg_as_Lydia_Deetz_%C3%82__Johan_Persson.jpg)

Her dad (Alasdair Harvey), meanwhile, will do just about anything to move forward, whether through his not-so-secret relationship with Delia or his refusal to speak about his late wife at all. At its best, the book digs into grief and the desperate, different ways people try to process it. But aside from Lydia, the supporting characters always seem to be battling for the spotlight, so it is never quite clear whose story lies at the heart of the show.

The plot stays close enough to the movie’s. After the Maitlands’ death, their house is taken over by Charles, Delia and Lydia, while Beetlejuice will do just about anything to get a living person to say his name three times in order to return to the land of the living. Still, Eddie Perfect’s songs are largely underwhelming, with Lydia’s anguish-driven number “Dead Mom” standing out as the rare sparkling moment.

The cast is unanimously strong, with welcome characterful additions from Irvine Iqbal’s lip-licking Maxie Dean and Atkinson’s desperately needy Delia. Nordberg sings her heart out on every pitch-perfect note. Fynn, meanwhile, makes Beetlejuice a suitably screeching nuisance.

This show otherwise rides heavily on its flashy design, but if it’s a bold aesthetic you’re after, you’re in the right place. With a set by David Korins that sees doors to Hell appear from thin air, fire flying from actors’ hands, and a supersized sandworm puppet emerging from the side of the stage, it’s definitely a feast for the eyes. It might be best to forget about the story and surrender to the hellish mayhem instead.

*Beetlejuice* is at the Prince Edward Theatre to 17 April 2027. Book [*Beetlejuice* tickets](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/45407-beetlejuice-the-musical) on LondonTheatre.co.uk

'Beetlejuice' review — surrender to the hellish mayhem of this musical spectacular

Beetlejuice - LT - 1200

Read our review of *Beetlejuice*, starring David Fynn, now in performances at the Prince Edward Theatre to 17 April 2027.

Based on Tim Burton’s beloved movie classic, this wildly funny - and weirdly life-affirming – musical tells the tale of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager sharing her home with a pair of newly-deads and the demonic ghost-with-the-most, Beetlejuice. He’s dead trouble, but if you really want to feel alive, just say his name three times…

The Prince Edward Theatre, one of London's most celebrated theatrical venues, is located in the heart of the city's West End. Opened in 1930, the theatre boasts a rich history and an impressive architectural style with art deco influences. The theatre is famous for hosting ground-breaking productions, with a focus on large-scale musicals. Its 1600-seat auditorium is renowned for the spectacular performances it entertains, and for its elegant and lavish interior. Notable productions include 'Evita', 'Miss Saigon', and the current long-running 'Aladdin'. The theatre was considered special even during its inception, as it was the first theatre built on a steel frame giving it a wider, roomier feel. The Prince Edward theatre is a must-visit for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the captivating world of London Theatre.

## What to Watch For

- The *Wicked* soundtrack is out of this world. No, really! To wake up astronauts on a mission, NASA once played astronauts the song "Defying Gravity".
- To make up Glinda’s bubble dress that she wears at the start of the show, 36 petals are featured, as well as 20 types of sequin. Nearly 100,000 sequins actually appear on the dress! In order to maintain the dress, it takes one person four hours, for four days a week to care for it.
- In the history of *Wicked* in London, there is only one person to have played both the roles of Elphaba and Glinda — Louise Dearman, in 2012.
- Wicked uses the “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” notes for “Unlimited / I’m Limited” during the show.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, *Wicked* features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (*Godspell, The Prince of Egypt*) and is directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento – both Tony winners. Since its Broadway premiere in 2003, introducing Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, *Wicked* has won more than 100 awards. It has also become one of the longest-running productions in West End history. Audiences worldwide have experienced its magic through the record-breaking film adaptations starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. There’s no doubt that *Wicked*’s appeal to audiences of all ages remains truly “unlimited”.

## What to watch for

- Elphaba’s showstopping flight during “Defying Gravity” at the end of Act One still takes audiences’ breath away night after night. NASA has even used it to wake up astronauts during a mission!
- Louise Dearman remains the only actress to have played both Elphaba and Glinda.
- Author Gregory Maguire created the name “Elphaba” by phonetically reworking the initials of *Wizard of Oz* author L. Frank Baum – L.F.B.
- The choreography for “What Is This Feeling?” in Jon M. Chu’s *Wicked* film adaptation went viral on social media, with fans recreating the routine performed by Ariana Grande’s Glinda.

Defy gravity at this award-winning musical about how Glinda and Elphaba began as friends before becoming the Good Witch and Wicked Witch of the West. Hear now-classic showtunes like "Defying Gravity" and "No Good Deed," and see why *Wicked* remains popular after all these years.

As Glinda descends from the rafters in her bubble, the audience cheers immediately. As Elphaba defies gravity as she flies over the stage, the audience gasps with disbelief. It’s impossible not to be swept away in *Wicked*’s pure theatricality. More than 15 years after Wicked flew into the West End, the Olivier Award-winning musical is still an evening of sheer musical theatre bliss.

Over 11 million people have visited the land of Oz across 6,000 performances and counting. The musical has won 13 awards, including the Olivier Award for Most Popular Show, and *Wicked* has become one of the most successful musicals of all time. Often when a show has been playing for a long time, it can lose some of the initial magic, but *Wicked* is still as lively and dynamic as ever.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s prequel novel of the same name, *Wicked* imagines an Oz before Dorothy followed the yellow brick road, one in which the “Wicked Witch” Elphaba and the “Good Witch” Galinda are roommates at school. *Wicked* is a story of an unlikely friendship and how the truth isn’t always what meets the eye. Add spine-tingling ballads, a dragon, and stage magic into the mix, and Wicked sets the bar for what musical theatre can be.

Winnie Holzman’s multilayered book peels back L. Frank Baum’s *The Wizard of Oz* to shine more light on what happens along the way. Every time you watch Wicked, you’ll hear a new line, or see a new character approach that uncovers more information; it’s no wonder that Wicked fans — Ozians — visit the land of Oz dozens of times to unpick the hidden truths about the lion, the scarecrow, and the tin man.

*Wicked* wouldn’t be complete without [Stephen Schwartz’s influential score](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/stephen-schwartz-musicals); and songs like “For Good” now transcend popular culture as pop stars, like Leann Rimes and Delta Goodrem, cover the iconic duet. But there’s no place like home, and that’s hearing Schwartz’s anthemic songs live, complete with a 23-piece orchestra. Pair Schwartz’s music with Wayne Cilento’s explosive choreography, especially in the show-stopping “Dancing Through Life” when the students go to their first dance, and Wicked is poetry in motion.

Eugene Lee’s intricate and moody scenic design extends into the auditorium, thanks to a giant smoking dragon and flying monkeys climbing up the walls. Kenneth Posner’s lighting design and Tony Meola’s sound design amplify the tension, especially when the animated wizard mask comes alive and the wizard’s booming voice reverberates around the auditorium. But there’s plenty of brightness too, especially in Susan Hilferty’s viridescent Ozian costumes and Galinda’s kaleidoscopic wardrobe.

Elphaba has become a coveted role for thousands of performers. From Idina Menzel winning the Tony Award for originating the role on Broadway to Kerry Ellis, Rachel Tucker, and Louise Dearman, each performer has put their own spin on the role and the iconic ballads: “The Wizard and I,” I’m Not That Girl,” “Defying Gravity,” and “No Good Deed”. Lucie Jones comes into her own as the green witch, deftly moving from frustration to sweetness to fury, as Elphaba navigates the world around her and quickly learns that not everyone means what they say. Helen Woolf is bubbly perfection as Glinda, with her sweet soprano and dry wit.

There’s something in *Wicked* for everyone. From the childlike wonder at the magical world of Oz to the political undertones about our leaders’ role in society to the universal message that true beauty lies within, *Wicked* leaves the audience with food for thought and also, wanting more. It’s no wonder that the musical has captured the hearts of so many over the years and will continue to do so for many years to come. *Wicked* is certainly here to stay in the West End for good.

Add that to *The Mousetrap*’s record-breaking West End run, and it’s fair to say that Agatha Christie changed the landscape of the English language.

Agatha Christie didn’t think much of *The Mousetrap* when it first opened though. Christie originally wrote the play for radio, and it later became a play, that at the time, Christie thought would only run for around 8 months. *The Mousetrap* play was written as a gift for Queen Mary’s 80th birthday in 1947. Agatha Christie then gave her grandson, Mathew Pritchard, the rights to the play for his ninth birthday.

Agatha Christie's '<a href="/show/the-mousetrap">The Mousetrap</a>', opened in the West End on the 25th November 1952, which means it has been running for over 50 years making it the world's longest running play - an incredible achievement for any play and one that the producers are rightly proud of. In the course of the first 50 years, according to the programme notes, over 10 million people have seen the show and over 395 tons of ice cream have been sold!So what is the show's success? Part of it has to do with the fame of playwright Agatha Christie. In 1962 UNESCO announced that she was the most widely read British writer in the world, beating even Shakespeare, who came a miserable second. As the creator of such famous sleuths as Miss Jane Marple and the famous French, sorry Belgian, Detective Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie is the most famous 'whodunnit' crime writer of all time. Who has not heard of "Death on the Nile" or "Murder on the Orient Express"?Agatha Christie's fame has surely played a part in this show's success. In the 1950's Christie's books were regularly in the top sellers list. It was hardly surprising that a play, which has never been published or turned into a movie or tv programme, should attract avid fans. Since that initial enthusiasm the show has now become one of the essential things to do on many a tourists schedule - go to Buckingham Palace, visit the Tower of London and see 'The Mousetrap'.The play is your regular 'whodunit' mystery. Eight people are snowed in at a guest house: Mollie and Giles Ralston, the owners; four invited guests, each with eccentric characteristics; the unexpected guest, who turns up out of the blue after his car overturns in the snow storm; and finally a skiing detective. Once everyone has arrived it is not long before a murder takes place and the detective assembles all the guests together and interrogates them one by one. Each avoid the truth, some by silence and others by lies? Can the murderer be caught before more deaths happen?The story, whilst sensational and full of silly coincidences, is actually quite good. The characters are, despite their histrionics, vivid and they interact amongst themselves with macabre amusement. There are enough false clues to keep you guessing and a few hidden ones that mean if you stay alert you will not be too surprised to discover that the murderer is ****. Just kidding! If you want the answer to that question then you will need to go and see this quintessentially English murder mystery for yourself.NOTE: The star rating was added to this review by the editor after original publication<a href="/show/the-mousetrap">The Mousetrap Tickets</a> are now on sale.&nbsp;

Netflix makes its stage debut in spectacular fashion with this keenly anticipated – and, I can happily reveal, totally awe-inspiring – theatrical version of the streamer’s hit sci-fi series *[Stranger Things](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/what-to-expect-from-stranger-things-the-first-shadow)*. Crucially, it’s a must-see not just for superfans, but for anyone excited by boundary-pushing theatre that harnesses jaw-dropping special effects while telling a very relatable human story.

Largely taking place in 1959, it’s essentially a prequel to the 1980s-set show. We see teenage versions of familiar characters, including Henry Creel, who (spoiler alert!) we know will become Vecna, ruler of hellish dimension the Upside Down, and the big bad for the final season.

*[Stranger Things: The First Shadow](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/29263-stranger-things-the-first-shadow)* expands on Henry’s origin story as a troubled kid with nosebleeds and strange powers. His family has just moved to the idyllic small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The main tension is between those, like Henry, who long to seem “normal” and fit in, and others such as Joyce Maldonado and Jim Hopper who yearn to rebel and escape this sleepy town.

It’s an inspired choice for a story, both a thrill for fans, enriching characters we know and love, and, as a standalone prequel tale, accessible to newcomers. This remarkable production should also sell audiences on the specific wonder of theatre – just as another Sonia Friedman-backed phenomenon, *[Harry Potter and the Cursed Child](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/21176-harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child-parts-one-two-tickets?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaignid=17734799447&utm_adgroupid=154524569757&utm_adid=676915756229&utm_term=harry+potter+and+the+cursed+child&utm_matchtype=b&utm_campaign=TTG_LT_g_uk_domestic_acq_search_shows&utm_adgroup=Shows_Harry_Potter_All&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAj_CrBhD-ARIsAIiMxT860MD4vMWY_Jhpkz-iAvK5T5hxdGEqD81UUKqtFUnfgUTlf4wAX5caAuAhEALw_wcB)*, has done.

I’m loathe to give away too many details. Suffice to say there’s a spooky mystery, which brings together a misfit group of amateur sleuths. That’s Joyce, who’s directing a secret, subversive school play; Hopper, aka “Junior”, who is constantly undermined by his bullying cop father; and tech geek Bob, who’s the closest to the show’s D&D crew.

We also see Henry bond with a fellow outsider, Bob’s adopted, mixed-race sister Patty, over a shared love of comic books. Parent-child relationships are a key factor here, and the supernatural is firmly rooted in the psychological – primarily fear and trauma. It’s no coincidence that several dads are war veterans.

Writer Kate Trefry, in consultation with Jack Thorne and the Duffer Brothers, perfectly matches the series’ blend of horror and humour. Stephen Daldry likewise combines digital and theatrical magic to create otherworldly effects (like the bravura opening, involving a disappearing naval ship, through to levitation, exploding light bulbs and spine-tingling scenes in the Upside Down), without ever losing sight of the human drama.

That latter is boosted by the incredible casting. Isabella Pappas isn’t just a dead ringer for Winona Ryder, she also nails Joyce’s mix of bravado and vulnerability. Oscar Lloyd captures the misunderstood young Hopper’s unfocussed energy, while Christopher Buckley is wonderfully endearing as Bob.

Excellent too are Ella Karuna Williams as the sensitive Patty, Patrick Vaill as a chillingly manipulative Dr Brenner, Matthew Pigeon as the authoritarian principal, Michael Jibson as Henry’s haunted dad, Lauren Ward as his terrified mum, and, in what should be a star-making role, Louis McCartney as Henry – by turns shy, awkward, enraged, scared and curious as he battles to own his identity.

Miriam Buether’s sleek design – aided by a speedy revolve, which also helps Daldry snap-cut between scenes – whisks us between the high school gym and a creepy attic, via alternate worlds and fantasy numbers. Brigitte Reiffenstuel supplies evocative period costumes, and DJ Walde judiciously selects songs that flip between nostalgic and disturbing, like “I Only Have Eyes For You” (*Buffy* nerds will recognise that from a season two episode.)

At times, when we’re plunged into darkness, with only torch beams to guide us, it feels like a return to telling spooky tales around a campfire. Budding director Joyce also preaches the power of stories – and that becomes a key *Hamlet*-riffing plot point. This astounding show definitely feels like a new chapter in theatre. It’s out of this world.
