In the realm of elite society in 18th-century France, Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont approach flirtation and seduction like something to be played with, and people like things to be toyed with. They are former lovers and both master manipulators and schemers who make one mistake too many, causing innocent victims to fall into their deceitful trap. But once the stakes get too high for both of them, everything begins to crack beneath their feet, and the damage they’ve sown becomes too much for them to manage.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a play by Christopher Hampton, who adapted Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic novel, filled with brilliant performances and smashing storytelling marked by cruelty and lies, making this revival a compelling night at the theatre.
