About Blood of my Blood
Don’t miss Blood of my Blood, Joy Nesbitt’s new play about ancestry and inheritance at the Royal Court Theatre. Book Blood of my Blood tickets on TodayTix.
In South Carolina in 1862, Ginnie Good raises her five children in a cabin on a plantation while the Civil War rages around them. Today, the cabin remains standing, but its purpose has radically changed. Now it operates as an Airbnb and has become the destination for a pregnant Black woman searching for answers about herself and her family. Through the practice of conjure, she attempts to reach the ancestors who once lived in that space.
Blood of my Blood is a play that moves between these two periods as the women's histories intertwine, exploring what families inherit beyond possessions and what they can leave behind in a physical home over generations.
Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ, Jodie Campbell, Hannah Morrish, Karene Peter, and Patrick Vaill make up the formidable cast of this world premiere, directed by Tatenda Shamiso.

More information about Blood of my Blood
Blood of my Blood in London marks playwright Joy Nesbitt’s Royal Court debut and forms part of the theatre’s 70th anniversary season. The world premiere plays in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, continuing the Royal Court’s focus on developing and staging work by new playwrights.
This play has also received support from the Concord Theatricals Unpublished Playwrights Award, an initiative supporting work by debut writers. Nesbitt has described this piece as being inspired by her own ancestors and by Black women whose stories have often gone unheard and undocumented.
Tatenda Shamiso returns to the Royal Court as director following work including No I.D. and A Good House.
The production also brings together set and costume designer Natalie Pryce, lighting designer Simisola Majekodunmi, and sound designer Kayodeine. Together, this company brings Nesbitt’s historical and deeply generational story to the Royal Court stage.
