About The Pianist
The world stage premiere of The Pianist.
Based on Wladyslaw Szpilman‘s extraordinary internationally bestselling memoir, this landmark new production, adapted and directed by the acclaimed Thom Southerland (Titanic the Musical), brings one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable true stories to the stage featuring Szpilman’s own music for the very first time.
Original compositions from the so-called ‘Polish Gershwin’ score his story: popular songs that had Warsaw humming, compositions that made him a star all given rich new life in orchestrations by Simon Lee, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-time musical director. A cast of virtuoso actor-musicians conjures the golden age of Jewish Warsaw in all its warmth and wit: the packed concert halls, the candlelit cafés, the irrepressible spirit of a city that loved music above all else.
At its heart, this is a love letter to culture, to the artists and dreamers who carried it, and to the extraordinary power of creativity to outlast even the most turbulent chapters of history. Szpilman’s music doesn’t merely accompany this story; it breathes life into it, binding past to present and reminding us that some things, once made, can never truly be silenced.
Profound. Life-affirming. Unmissable.

One of the most moving musicals I've seen in a while. Such a beautiful score, played by an ensemble of actor musicians. This piece truly uses it's cast to it's full potential, whilst harmoniusly playing a variety of instruments all so beautifully. The Pianist is based around the times of world war two in Warsaw, at its heart is the Szpilman family, all musicians but when the nazis are on the way their whole life changes, this was the time of the Holocaust were walls and this family were separated but the only thing that kept them together was music in the concert halls and candle cafes of yesteryear. It's based on Wladyslaw's real life experience of both being a composer loved by all but also being a Jewish family man trying to hide himself to just live and get by and doing anything to survive. Let's start with the creative design of the piece, it's set design is both minimal and powerful having the piano for the majority at its centre stage with the family of actor musicians surrounding it with a hard wood back drop with musical score projected onto it. When moved it reveals further back into the set only with a few chairs and the piano to move into when the scenes upstage are prioritised. It's score is fully played by it's ensemble which makes the authenticity of the piece they more heartfelt. Now to the performances and if theirs one thing besides how close the chemistry is between the family and how much the actor museo style relies on how great the communication between each other is that, they way Dan Krikler orchestrates the piece is wonderful to watch with even just a swift of the hand to move either performers around the stage or to start the pianist playing, the way he has such emotional attachment to the way he speaks throughout the piece, I honestly couldn't keep my eyes off him when he was talking, his performance truly drew you in. I love shows that are based on true moments in history or about a person's life as the attachment to the piece or the person is easier to attach to. This world premiere musical is the best i've seen at this venue and it's emotional story is one that needs to be heard by everyone. The Pianist is at Park Theatre untill 28th November 2026 please see new musicals and keep these important stories alive.
