About Mr Loverman
Don’t miss Mr Loverman, Natasha Gordon’s stage adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s acclaimed novel about a tender love kept secret for 60 years, at the National Theatre. Book Mr Loverman tickets on TodayTix.
Mr Loverman in London introduces the audience to Barrington Walker, who has spent decades building a respectable, fruitful life in Hackney. Otherwise known as Barry, he is stylish and wildly charismatic. He is a father, husband, and grandfather whose place in his family and community seems firmly established.
There is only one truth he has never been able to tell. Since their youth in Antigua, Barry has been in love with and in a relationship with his best friend Morris for the last six decades.
As Barry begins to imagine a life where he no longer has to hide their love for each other, he must also confront the ramifications of that decision for his wife Carmel and their family.

More information about Mr Loverman
Bernardine Evaristo published Mr Loverman in 2013, years before she became the first Black woman to win the Booker Prize for Girl, Woman, Other in 2019. The novel places an older, gay Caribbean man at its centre and explores themes of identity, migration, masculinity, and family dynamics through Barry’s distinctive voice.
Natasha Gordon brings this story to life on stage following the success of her debut play Nine Night. Its West End transfer made Gordon the first Black British female playwright to have a play produced in the West End.
Paulette Randall MBE directs the National Theatre premiere, with Tim Hatley on set and costume design, Tim Lutkin on lighting design, Carolyn Downing on sound design, and Joseph Roberts serving as composer and music director.
Danny Sapani stars as Barry, with Gary Beadle as Morris, and Jo Martin as Carmel. Paulette Randall MBE directs Natasha Gordon’s funny and sweet new adaptation.
