About Suddenly Last Summer

Don’t miss Emma Corrin and Harriet Walter in Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer at the National Theatre. Book Suddenly Last Summer tickets on TodayTix.

Suddenly Last Summer is a play that presents us with Violet Venable, who is determined to preserve the less-than-honest reputation of her late son Sebastian. But her niece, Catharine, who was with him during the last summer of his life, remembers a version of events that is quite different.

Catharine’s account of things threatens the vision of Sebastian that Violet would like to keep whole, and soon, Catharine’s reliability comes into question. As the family challenges her and makes her question her memories, a young doctor must decide whether the story she is telling is evidence of a trauma or if it is simply the truth.

Michael Grandage directs Tennessee Williams’ haunting drama as he returns to the National Theatre for the first time since 2010.

More information about Suddenly Last Summer

Tennessee Williams first presented Suddenly Last Summer in 1958 as part of Garden District, a double bill that also included his one-act play Something Unspoken. Its original Off-Broadway production opened in January of that year as well.

Williams would later adapt the play for the screen with Gore Vidal. The 1959 film starred Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift, and brought this disturbing family drama to a much wider audience on screen.

For this National Theatre revival of Suddenly Last Summer in London, Michael Grandage directs Emma Corrin and Harriet Walter in their central roles, with Arty Froushan as Dr Cukrowicz.

This show also boasts a masterful creative team, including set and costume design by Christopher Oram, lighting design by Howard Hudson, music and sound by Adam Cork, and video design by Andrzej Goulding.

Grandage last directed at the National Theatre in 2010 with a staging of Danton’s Death.
