About Amadeus
Don’t miss Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells in Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus at the Noël Coward Theatre. Book Amadeus tickets on TodayTix.
Amadeus is a play that zeroes in on Antonio Salieri, who has built a rather successful career for himself as a composer at the Viennese court. He is confident that his devotion to God and his hard work have earned him his current position—until he meets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Mozart is everything Salieri believes a great composer shouldn’t be. He is immature, vulgar, and irreverent. Unfortunately, he is also a musical genius possessing a gift that Salieri does not have.
Unable to reconcile Mozart’s personal failings with his extraordinary gift of music, Salieri decides that God has deliberately chosen an undeserving man for greatness. As his fascination with Mozart turns ugly, his envy hardens into a determination to destroy Mozart’s career before it can truly begin.
Michael Sheen stars as Salieri opposite Callum Scott Howells as Mozart in Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed drama. Jeremy Herrin directs this major revival, which arrives in the West End following an engagement at Cardiff’s New Theatre.

More information about Amadeus
Amadeus in London premiered at the National Theatre in 1979, with Paul Scofield playing Salieri and Simon Callow as Mozart. The drama then transferred to Broadway, where Ian McKellen and Tim Curry took on the central roles.
Shaffer later adapted his own play for Miloš Forman’s celebrated 1984 film. The movie became a major success and helped to shape Shaffer’s fictionalised battle between Mozart and Salieri into one of the most famous depictions of classical music in general pop culture.
This new production is a full-circle story for Michael Sheen, who played Mozart in Peter Hall’s production in London and on Broadway in the late 1990s before ultimately switching roles to play Salieri at the Sydney Opera House in 2022.
Sheen now stars opposite fellow Welsh actor Callum Scott Howells, whom he previously directed in the television drama The Way. The production is a collaboration between Welsh National Theatre and Jeremy Herrin’s Second Half Productions, with Bunny Christie designing the set and Lez Brotherston creating the costumes.
