When *Cats: The Jellicle Ball* premiered off Broadway, it was met with resounding rave reviews that praised the revival's fresh interpretation: turning the competition of singing, dancing cats into a ballroom celebration, where queer performers vogue and pose to win rebirth into a new life. The revival is inspired by the world of ball culture born in 20th-century NYC and still thriving today, offering LGBTQ+ communities a safe space to express themselves as they compete in fashion, dance, and performance categories on behalf of "houses."

It is a major makeover for *Cats*, which became a cultural icon and one of Broadway's longest-running shows when the original production premiered in 1982. Now, it is back in New York in a thrilling revival that The New York Times called "exhilarating, fanciful, and fabulous," and Time Out New York called "the musical of the season" in a five-star review.

*The Jellicle Ball* has an A-list team: it is directed by Obie Award winners Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, with choreography by Obie Award winners and New York City ballroom legends Omari Wiles (House of Ricci) and Arturo Lyons (House of Miyake-Mugler).

*CATS: The Jellicle Ball* is a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical, set in the exciting nightlife ballroom scene.

André Robin De Shields was born January 12, 1946 in Dundalk, Maryland, a community within Baltimore. He is an award-winning actor, singer, choreographer, director, and dancer who has been active in his performance career since the 1960s, but he did not study the discipline in college — he holds a B.A. in English literature from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in African American studies from New York University, where he now serves as an adjunct professor.&nbsp;He did, however, star in a production of Lorraine Hansberry's&nbsp;A Raisin in the Sun&nbsp;while at Ohio's Wilmington College, which he attended before transferring to Wisconsin. A few years later, he would make his professional debut in a 1969 Chicago production of&nbsp;Hair.

De Shields has numerous other regional credits to his name and three Jeff Awards for that work, but his most prolific appearances&nbsp;have&nbsp;been on the New York stage, where he has built a long and celebrated career since the&nbsp;1970s. From then until the 1990s, he appeared in multiple productions at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club on Manhattan's Lower East Side, including Ken Rubenstein's Sacred Guard, Lamar Alford's Thoughts, and the&nbsp;Cotton Club Gala. He also directed two shows there:&nbsp;Chico Kasinoir's The Adventures of Rhubarb: The Rock and Roll Rabbit in 1985 and Saint Tous, which De Shields wrote himself.&nbsp;

Between La MaMa shows, De Shields also made his Broadway debut in the 1970s. His performance debut was as&nbsp;Xander in Stuart Gordon's 1973 science fiction play&nbsp;Warp!, and he made his choreography debut later that year on a Bette Midler revue, followed by a second one in 1975. His other notable Broadway roles include the titular role in&nbsp;The Wiz&nbsp;in 1975, a performer in the 1978 musical revue&nbsp;Ain't Misbehavin'&nbsp;and its 1988 revival, the Jester in the Duke Ellington musical Play On!, and the original&nbsp;Noah "Horse" T. Simmons in&nbsp;The Full Monty, Terrence McNally and David Yazbek's musical adaptation of the same-named film. His&nbsp;Play On!&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Full Monty&nbsp;performances each earned him a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk nomination. Most recently, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Hermes in&nbsp;[Hadestown](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hadestown-tickets), a role he still holds. His was one of eight Tony Awards the production won at the 2019 ceremony.

De Shields is also a veteran screen actor, having won an Emmy Award for&nbsp;the 1982 broadcast of Ain't Misbehavin' .&nbsp;Most recently, in another theater-film hybrid, he&nbsp;appeared as Anton Ego in a benefit concert performance of&nbsp;Ratatouille The Musical, streamed on TodayTix in January 2021.&nbsp;De Shields&nbsp;has also held roles on television shows including&nbsp;Cosby, Sex and the City, Law &amp; Order,&nbsp;Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit, and Katy Keene, and he was&nbsp;a musical guest on John Mulaney's 2019 Netflix comedy special The Sack Lunch Bunch.&nbsp;

Moore follows *Cats: The Jellicle Ball* to Broadway after winning an Obie Award as a special citation with the ensemble of that hit off Broadway production.

The Broadhurst Theatre is a prestigious, century-old Broadway venue located in Midtown Manhattan, New York. It was named after the renowned playwright George H. Broadhurst, an Anglo-American who was originally from Bristol, England. Constructed by the Shubert Brothers and designed by the architectural firm Kirchoff & Rose, Broadhurst Theatre opened its doors to the public on September 27, 1917, with its first-ever staged play, George Bernard Shaw’s 'Misalliance'. Spanning over a wide space of 20,000 square feet, it can comfortably seat slightly over 1,100 spectators on two levels. With its decorative ceilings, excellent acoustics, central location, and intimate seating arrangement, the Broadhurst Theatre has been attracting Broadway artists and audience for over 100 years.

The Broadhurst Theatre is centrally located at 235 West 44th Street, and this strategic location makes it easily accessible from all parts of the city. If you're using public transportation, Times Square's 42nd Street subway station is the closest, served by various train lines such as the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, S. Cry no more, little sister! The supernatural horror-comedy film upon which the musical is based developed a dedicated cult following after its 1987 release, also picking up some awards along the way. It also acted as a springboard for the careers of Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Feldman, and others. Now, a new generation will get to take a bite out of this haunting and thrilling tale.

Darren Everett Criss was born on February 5, 1987 in San Francisco, California. He is a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor and singer-songwriter, perhaps best known for his TV roles as Blaine Anderson on Fox’s hit musical series Glee&nbsp;and as Andrew Cunanan in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Criss attended Stuart Hall for Boys and Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, graduating in 2005. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan in 2009, majoring in theatre&nbsp;performance and minoring in Italian and musicology.

Criss began his career on the stage in the San Francisco area, appearing in regional productions for 42nd&nbsp;Street Moon and the American Conservatory Theater, among others. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he co-founded the&nbsp;musical theatre&nbsp;company StarKid Productions with a few of his classmates and enjoyed success with StarKid's&nbsp;productions of A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, and A Very Potter Senior Year (based on the Harry Potter novels), as well as Me and My Dick.

Criss made his Broadway debut as J. He returned to Broadway to assume the titular role in <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/hedwig-and-the-angry-inch">Hedwig and the Angry Inch</a> at the Belasco Theatre from April through July 2015, and he reprised the role in the San Francisco and Los Angeles engagements of the production’s national tour in October and November of 2016.

In addition, Criss is also a co-founder of Elsie Fest, New York City’s annual outdoor music festival dedicated to show tunes, which has been in existence since 2015.

In television, following his role as Josh Burton on ABC’s Eastwick,&nbsp;Criss shot to global stardom after landing the role of Blaine Anderson in Fox’s smash hit musical series Glee.&nbsp;He would star in a total of 90 episodes from 2010 through 2015, and he earned his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics&nbsp;in 2015 for penning the original song “This Time” for the series finale.

Aside from his work on Glee,&nbsp;Criss earned critical acclaim in 2018 for his performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan in the second season of the anthology series American Crime Story,&nbsp;subtitled The Assassination of Gianni Versace,&nbsp;on FX. The greasers, including the iconic characters of Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, have an often rocky brotherhood, but in a society that's all but abandoned them, it's all they have. *The Outsiders* musical tells a timeless coming-of-age story about finding hope and connection in a rough world.

Hinton published her novel in 1967, the same year the show is set and three years after she started writing the novel while still in high school herself. *The Outsiders* book and its subsequent 1983 film adaptation remain groundbreaking for their naturalistic, unsanitized portrayals of how teenagers talk and act and what happens when they're neglected. The film also launched the careers of then-new actors like Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and Matt Dillon.

Experience a classic story of brotherhood and coming of age as a heartfelt folk musical. Inspired by S. E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, this show follows the lives of teenage have-nots whose best hope for survival and acceptance is in their brotherhood.

*The Outsiders* musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in spring 2023. It is inspired both by Hinton's 1967 novel and Coppola's 1983 movie, adapting dialogue and narrative elements from each. Director Danya Taymor, in her second Broadway directing gig after *Pass Over*, and Tony-nominated bookwriter Adam Rapp (*The Sound Inside*) provide fresh updates to the characters.

The heart of the story, though, remains the same — like the book, *The Outsiders* on Broadway is poetic without sacrificing grittiness. What made Hinton's novel so groundbreaking for its time (and the film, too) was how naturalistically she portrayed the lives, speech, and mannerisms of struggling, abandoned teenagers — something rarely portrayed in media at the time.

- S. E. Hinton started writing *The Outsiders* when she was just 15 years old and still in high school! She was 18 when it was published, and she later cameoed in the film as a nurse.
- *The Outsiders* features music by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Other shows with folk music include the Tony-winning *Hadestown* and the Tony-nominated *Bright Star*.
- Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's father, scored *The Outsiders* film. We wonder if Jamestown Revival incorporated any themes or similar sounds into the stage score!
- The movie launched the careers of multiple then-new actors now known as the Brat Pack, including Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.
- The Tulsa, Oklahoma house where *The Outsiders* was filmed is now a museum featuring props from the movie. Hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, a lifelong fan of the book and film, bought and restored it from its once-run-down condition in 2016.
