More information about Fiasco Theater's Pericles
The seafaring tale of Pericles unfolds as the wandering prince of the title seeks the hand of a princess in Antioch, only to discover her illicit relationship with her father. Fleeing for his life, Pericles embarks on adventure after adventure after he escapes his engagement. From a difficult journey bringing grain to Tarsus during a famine to winning a tournament and marrying the king’s daughter in Pentapolis, and the loss of ships and men in a storm, Pericles faces joy and peril with open arms.
Fiasco Theater, an ensemble theatre company based in New York City, was founded by co-artistic directors who first crossed paths during the early years of their MFA acting program. They wore various hats as actors, directors, and writers there and made that their mission at Fiasco — one co-artistic director, Ben Steinfeld, stages Pericles off Broadway.
What to watch for
- There was a real historical figure named Pericles who worked as a politician and military general in Greece during the 400s BC. The Pericles play, though, is based on an entirely fictional story about a character named Apollonius of Tyre. Shakespeare just changed the main character’s name.
- William Shakespeare isn’t thought to be the sole author of Pericles. Many modern scholars credit George Wilkins, who published a different literary version of Pericles’s adventures, as a co-author.
- Fiasco Theater previously updated a different much-revered work: Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Their critically acclaimed 2015 production made headlines for its intimacy, being staged with only 10 actors and one piano.
- Pericles will be Fiasco Theater’s fifth production of a Shakespeare play, following previous productions of Cymbeline, Measure for Measure, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Twelfth Night.
- The word “fiasco” was first used centuries ago, the word was used specifically to describe Italian commedia dell’arte performances that went wrong. The co-founders adopted the name to highlight their dedication to artistic risk-taking.
