Romeo and Juliet has had many lives: there have been multiple films and various Broadway revivals, but also fresh adaptations for the stage, including the musical West Side Story and, now on Broadway, & Juliet, which imagines a different ending to the classic tale. Now, a new production featuring music by Jack Antonoff comes to the Great White Way.

Stage and screen stars have long sought to play the title roles in Shakespeare’s famous drama, with a previous Broadway production casting Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad. Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, known for playing lovestruck youths in West Side Story and Heartstopper, now get the chance to tackle these meaty roles in Romeo + Juliet in New York. The timeless story of love and hate has endured for centuries and seems to never go out of style even as the world evolves: countries still war, families hold prejudices, and there is always a form of love deemed taboo.

What to watch for

• A musical adaptation calls for dancing, and choreographer Sonya Tayeh (a Tony Award winner for Moulin Rouge!) is the play’s movement director.
• This is not Sam Gold’s first Shakespeare production on Broadway: he previously directed Macbeth with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga and King Lear with Glenda Jackson
• Many actresses have played Juliet, and many have sung as Maria, her West Side Story counterpart, but few have played both, and no one besides Rachel Zegler on such a Hollywood and Broadway scale: the stars aligning makes for a very exciting Broadway debut for the young actress.
• The show’s marketing and social media presence are bringing a contemporary energy to the centuries-old story: the tagline, after all, is “The youth are f–ked.”
