About Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes

See the star comedian live on stage at the Lucille Lortel Theatre downtown. Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes plays for a limited time only this summer, from July to September, and offers audiences an intimate story about Cohen's life — and almost death.

Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes in New York recounts a stroke Cohen had at age 30 due to a literal hole in her heart. A sign? See how Cohen transforms this morbid experience into a wildly funny, song-filled one-woman show where she discusses mortality, hypochondria, and the undeniable thrill of being the main character. Audiences can expect a confessional comedy and sparkling musical cabaret, but even more so a chance to see Cohen at her sharpest, funniest, and most fabulously vulnerable.

A woman in her 30s has a stroke. She survives. With the help of her stock-in-trade--jokes (she's a stand-up comic)--she shares the whole harrowing experience with us, all amid the freaky furnishings of a distinctly gothic-looking space in what might as well be Dracula's castle. Sound odd? It is. But in the capable hands of writer/performer Cat Cohen, it all dovetails together nicely as she leads us with a wink and a smile (and a lot of catchy song lyrics) from diagnosis to treatment to, in the end, full recovery. Is "Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes" more than a little unsettling? Of course. But is it the terrifying look at life and death that it could have been? No, which softens the impact considerably, and reminds us that the personable and charming Cohen wasn't trying to scare us as much as she was trying, quite simply, to entertain us. And entertain us she did. It's a serious tale, told in a most un-serious way. Worth seeing.

More information about Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes

Over the past decade, Cat Cohen has made a name for herself as a singular comic and actress who blends music and confessional storytelling into her rigorous and hysterical work. For her new piece, she collaborates with Broadway legend Alex Timbers, who directs.

Timbers is a mastermind of creating an event for audiences, as seen with Moulin Rouge!, Just in Time, Gutenberg! The Musical!, Beetlejuice, and many other credits. The Tony Award winner has branched into other special theatrical events, like Just for Us, and he now brings his chops to Cohen's show, collaborating with yet another star who is taking the stage.

In her new show, Cohen gets personal, discussing a medical journey and how it changed her life, but audiences know to expect many laughs — Cohen has a way of turning the mundane and extraordinary into hysterical jokes and reflections that offer deep insights into her, and our, collective humanity.
