About Gloria

Set an alert for when Gloria tickets go on sale to see this shocking, biting, and razor-sharp satire by Tony Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Appropriate, Purpose). Gloria plays as part of Second Stage Theater's 48th season, running for a limited time only at the Helen Hayes Theater. A story of the cut-throat magazine industry, a singular event inside one office, and how each employee responds to the aftermath, Gloria in New York City is an acclaimed play and Pulitzer Prize finalist that is finally making its Broadway debut.

Don't miss Gloria on Broadway: Jacobs-Jenkins is one of today's most lauded playwrights with a Pulitzer Prize and two Tony Awards. His works often tackle contemporary American life, race, ambition, and secrets. Gloria originated off Broadway where it was an instant hit thanks to its timely themes and compelling characters. Now, Second Stage's Artistic Director Evan Cabnet brings the celebrated play to Broadway.

More information about Gloria

Gloria is a shape-shifting play that takes place, at first, in a high-end magazine office where low-profile media workers try clawing their way to the top. Ruthless and driven, these striving New Yorkers are climbing the corporate ladder as the industry around them combusts. A recent period piece, Gloria satirizes the dog-eat-dog world of media that defined in-person work of the 2010s, before COVID upended that work cycle.

But it is another event that upends the work cycle depicted in this play — an unfathomable act that makes this story one about the very creation of stories. The play dives into writers' insidious ambitions and craven tactics to emerge on top.

“Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception," the play's director and Second Stage Artistic Director, Evan Cabnet, said in a statement.

What to watch for

  • The play was a Critic's Pick in The New York Times, Time Out New York, and Theatermania.
  • The Hollywood Reporter said the play is "provocative, sharply observant and playfully theatrical."
  • Evan Cabnet directed the original production at The Vineyard Theater downtown.
  • Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is also an Obie Award winner and his plays include Girls, Everybody, War, Appropriate, An Octoroon, and others.
