About ANON

Get ANON tickets on TodayTix to see this new play from theatre icon Anne Washburn, author of Mr. Burns, a post-electric play and The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire. Washburn, a Guggenheim fellow and Whiting Award winner, pairs up with Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee Anne Kauffman (Mary Jane, Marjorie Prime), who directs this premiere.

Concerning contemporary politics and online performance, ANON plays for a limited run at The Newman Mills Theatre at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theatre Space starting September 25. The play is set in Texas and follows an increasingly online social media user who notices a gay Pride flag unfurled across the street from her home.

Washburn is a defining playwright of our time, and Kauffman as esteemed a director, so don't miss ANON off Broadway this fall.

ANON by Anne Washburn at MCC is literally a tempest not in a teapot but the one American culture finds itself in right now. Referring to the Q-ANON phenomena, the story plays with fears that ravage families, neighborhhoods and entire countries when distorting reality becomes the focus of daily life. Humor and tragedy abounds in the contradictions that exist in creations of alternate realities. Excellent acting and direction aim the audience into viewing which reality is which.

Anne Washburn is one of our most exciting living playwrights, and I'm absolutely obsessed with her work. Her plays often deal with core themes of storytelling, how we tell our stories, why we tell them, how they are told and how these stories impact our lives. The idea of applying these principles to the timely subject of online conspiracy theorists and the people who create/follow them is brilliant. There is also a point towards the end of nearly every Washburn play where what we've seen takes a "meta" formal transformation into a bigger idea that reflects on the events we've seen so far in a new perspective. In "Anon" there are small hints to this transformation throughout, but when the actors start to directly quote Shakespeare's Tempest and speak in the Queen's English you know you've arrived. It's an exciting and clever ending. The issue I had is that everything leading up to that moment was mostly pedestrian dialog and predictable characters that were not so interesting. Still, I'll take an ok Washburn play any day. A worthwhile show to see.

More information about ANON

ANON is a timely new play about hyperonline culture, modern politics, and the performance of taking a side. For anyone who is used to spending time scrolling and scrolling through their social media feeds, this may all sound familiar, but Anne Washburn is a playwright known for subverting expectations and cracking open seemingly simple concepts with a lot of rigor, grace, and curiosity. She is a pioneering and imaginative writer, as seen when she burst onto the scene with her epic and science fiction-infused opus, Mr. Burns, a post-electric play.

Now, Washburn is back in New York City with another premiere, coming to a theatre known for its equally bold programming: MCC in Midtown, Manhattan. In the play, meet Jeanie: a TikToker in a Texas suburb. Two seemingly different households freak out when a Pride flag is raised, asking: how well do  you know actually know your neighbors?

What to watch for

  • Responding to our times, Anne Washburn's play asks if the line between reality and fantasy, in a hyperonline world, is becoming increasingly optional.
  • The cast includes Jeff Biehl, Crystal Finn, Andrew Garman, Izabel Mar, and Jeremy Shamos.
  • Director Anne Kauffman is known for her collaborations on bold works, prioritizing new American plays.
  • Washburn's Mr. Burns was a Drama League Award nominee for Outstanding Production and was praised by The New York Times as "downright brilliant."
