Guernica Guernica tickets

Guernica became famous twice: when the Basque city was brutally destroyed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, thus becoming the victim of the first strategic civilian bombardment in European history, and when Pablo Picasso chose the atrocity as the subject for his similarly named and now immortal work of protest art. And yet, the fame of the mural has largely outlived the fame of its own subject; people today remember the painting of the tragedy rather than the tragedy itself. Innovative theater collective FC Bergman utilizes this as a jumping off point for their latest creation, exploring whether images provide understanding or desensitize us to war, the shifting roles of perpetrators and victims, and the uneasy gaze of those who watch. This new and urgent production is structured as a breathtaking theatrical triptych from the perspective of those who suffered from it, those who caused it, and those who bear witness to it. Seated on two sides of a traverse stage, the audience has an ever-changing role as spectator as the action unfolds in front of them while drones in fight record and project intimate moments on large stadium screens overhead. With this theatrical happening, FC Bergman blends living sculpture, wordless drama, and historical documentary to create a bold new kind of protest art in response to conflict in our modern times.
