About Cloud 9
Don’t miss Cloud 9, Caryl Churchill’s satirical modern classic about gender, sexuality, and imperial power at the National Theatre. Book Cloud 9 tickets on TodayTix.
Cloud 9 is a play that starts the audience off in Victorian colonial Africa, where Clive is determined to keep his household operating according to his rules and his rules alone–those expected of a respectable British family. But his wife, children, servant, and even his friends are struggling to hold their identities with the relationships society has forced them to accept.
But suddenly, everything changes. The play jumps forward 100 years to London in the 1970s, though its characters have only aged 25 years. With social attitudes changing around them, they are given the opportunity to openly question the people they’ve been told they must be.
Rebecca Humphries, Eloka Ivo, Tom Mothersdale, Charlotte Ritchie, Ellen Robertson, Stuart Thompson, and Sam Troughton form the ensemble, switching roles across the two acts.

More information about Cloud 9
Cloud 9 in London first premiered in 1979 at Dartington College of Arts before a Joint Stock Theatre Company and Royal Court production reached the Royal Court that March. The original company included performers such as Antony Sher and Miriam Margolyes.
Churchill expertly built the play around deliberately unconventional casting choices – with the original text having performers cross boundaries of gender and race within the first act before their roles were rearranged again after the century jump, using casting to expose the identities society expects its characters to perform.
The play later reached Off-Broadway in 1981 in a production directed by Tommy Tune and became a major New York success, running for more than two years.
For this National Theatre revival, Dominic Cooke directs the show, reuniting with Churchill, while Miriam Buether designs the set, Samuel Wyer creates the costumes, Jessica Hung Han Yun provides lighting, and Donato Wharton designs sound.
